I SEE that the Town Hall is turning once more to one of its favourite fund raisers to bring in extra revenue - namely car parking charges.

I am lucky enough to live within easy walking distance of the city centre but I am still not happy with this latest increase.

What makes me angry is that the people who cheerfully impose these charges are exempt from them.

I would be very surprised to hear that any member of the city council Cabinet or, indeed, anyone working at the town hall, pays any parking fee. They will all have a designated parking space or a pass that allows them to use council car parks free of charge.

Considering Lancaster's traffic problems I have no real objection to the principle of discouraging unnecessary vehicles entering the city centre. However, while the people who have been given the job of managing this problem enjoy the privilege of free parking they have no real incentive to think radically and stop using parking charges as a milch cow.

If they had to pay, perhaps they would get their collective fingers out and start trying to find some real solutions to the congestion problem.
