HARD-WORKING Chorley made Morecambe fight all the way to seal a place in the Lancashire FA's Marsden Cup final on Tuesday night.

The Unibond Division One strugglers belied their lowly status with a performance which had the Shrimps on the back foot for long periods.

But with just six minutes remaining, wingman Garry Thompson showed just why he is a favourite at Christie Park - firing in a superb volley to break the deadlock.

He met a corner swung in from the left by Dean Howell with a first time shot from 20 yards to leave home goalkeeper Bracey grasping at thin air.

And with time running out, Thompson added insult to injury as his raid down the right ended with a neat lay-off to substitute Paul Osborne, who had the simplest of tap-ins for his first Morecambe goal and a 2-0 Shrimps win.

It means Morecambe will now face Conference rivals Accrington Stanley in the cup final - they disposed of Radcliffe Borough by 6-3, also on Tuesday night.

Satisfied boss Jim Harvey, with one eye on the six-pointer against promotion rivals Barnet at Christie Park this Saturday (kick off 3pm), rested five players from his favoured starting line-up.

And he said later: "It was a good work out for us. I don't think our football was brilliant but it was a really solid performance.

"We might have scored earlier and made it easier for ourselves but Chorley kept going and worked very hard.
