IN ANSWER to B Ancell's letter about the 'island on the horizon'.
I have also noticed this and after looking at a map of the coastline have decided the land which is visible from the Promenade looking south is North Wales and Anglesey -- much to my family's amusement.
But it has to be, as Liverpool, Southport does not come far enough out and there is no other explanation.
The Isle of Man is much further up the coast, in fact it can be viewed from Hard Knott Pass, which I believe was why the Romans built a fort up there.
Barrow In Furness has also been very clearly seen this summer and on a particularly good day you can see the Langdales.
It all makes for a pleasant journey to and from work, whilst of course, driving at 30mph!
