A MAN who owed more than £1,100 in fines was jailed for 28 days by magistrates - at his own request!
Defence solicitor Clare Knight told Blackburn magistrates that Ziafat Ali, 24, was unemployed, not receiving benefits and had no means of paying the outstanding money.
"He has asked me to ask you if he can go into custody today," said Miss Knight. "I have explained all the options to him but these are my instructions and he is prepared for a custodial sentence."
Ali, of Neath Close, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to driving without insurance and other than in accordance with a licence and was fined a total of £130 and disqualified for two years. The penalty was added to the £1,049 already owed.
