REGARDING the story about the Chief Constable wanting 500 more police officers (LET, February 7). This is an admirable and innovative idea from Mr Stephenson and could only have come from a man of vision and would, I am sure, carry the support of all the law-abiding people of Lancashire.
The £6 million a year estimate for the 500 extra police is a manageable figure, if you put it against the £14 million generated by the county's 360 fixed speed cameras this year.
The Chief Constable should be firmly telling the relative government department, on our behalf, that he requires the £6 million a year for three years and that it should come out of the fixed camera money mountain and not out of our council tax.
