ONLY one man in 10 who applied to join Blackburn's fire brigade was considered suitable for the job, the borough's fire chief Tom Birtwhistle announced.
He appealed for more firemen as the brigade's strength of 55 was nine below the established level.
Meanwhile, a wall mirror was to blame for a fire which caused severe damage to a house in Burnley when it fell and upset an oil stove.
