Girl band Mis-teeq are warning local teenagers of the dangers on the road through a Lancashire County Council backed campaign.
In support of the government's national THINK! campaign, the Council's Road Safety Group are reminding teenagers to be alert when out on the roads. In 2002, 86 teenagers aged 12-16 were killed or seriously injured in Lancashire and 517 sustained slight injuries.
Sabrina of Mis-teeq explained: "Teenagers think they are more likely to be mugged, bullied or offered drugs than involved in a road accident. We are lending our support to the THINK! campaign to raise awareness of road safety among young teens and the need for all of us to act safely on the roads."
"Teenagers are often told about lots of different things that they should be wary of such as sex, drugs and alcohol, without realising that road safety is often just as dangerous if not more so."
Clare Farrer, Principal Road Safety Adviser, explained the reasons behind the campaign, "The majority of accidents involving pedestrians of this age are due to not paying attention.
"It is easy to be distracted if you're running across the street to catch a bus or preoccupied by a mobile phone."
