HYNDBURN Council's cabinet last night backed a budget of over £12million and a council tax increase of almost 10 per cent.
The budget was accepted by Conservative and Labour councillors on the cabinet and a scrutiny committee, and now goes before the full council on Tuesday.
Speaking at the cabinet, council leader Coun Peter Britcliffe said historical deficits within the borough and rising demands being put on council tax payers, through central government changes, were to blame.
"The Audit Commission has rightly pointed this out and it's generally accepted the council tax is unfair. Politicians are scurrying about to find a replacement."
He said any political party governing Hyndburn Council would face the same problem.
