In commenting on bus lanes, Lesley Richards raised an issue that causes many people a lot of grief.
It is quite illogical that bus lanes reduce road space during the times most people wish to use the public highways, and yet are de-restricted during the parts of the day when traffic is light and does not need the road space. While it is true that there are signs to indicate when the road restrictions apply these can be difficult to see amongst the rest of the roadside furniture, and the indicated times can change several times during a long journey.
It is important to remember that the driver in front may never have driven down the road before and possible does not know the area and could be following the route direction signs. To have a local motorist 'undertake' because they know the bus lane restrictions do not apply at that particular time, on that particular road, can be both unnerving and dangerous.
