Golborne Parkside 28 Millom 18: GOLBORNE Parkside pulled off the shock of the round in the GMB National Cup by dumping out Arriva Trains Conference side Millom
The NW Counties Division Four side struggled in the early exchanges as they came to terms with much more experienced and physically stronger opponents.
After a spell of pressure Millom took a 2-0 lead with a penalty goal before Leon Davy levelled.
Golborne conceded a converted try and then lost hooker Philip Shaw with
a broken leg and ankle. From the restart Golborne levelled from a set move in which prop Stuart Naylor crashed over for a try converted by Davy. Minutes later Golborne took the lead when Kevin Coward put Davy through
a gap for a try converted by himself.
Golborne were in total charge and Robert Dooley crashed over for an
unconverted try to make it 18-8 at half time.
Millom bounced back as once again Golborne fell off the pace of the game and after 51 minutes they were back to 18-18 with two quick tries and
one conversion.
This only spurred Golborne into action and two minutes later they were back in from when, after good teamwork, winger Anthony Speirs raced 50 meters for his 20th try of the season. Golborne were now in control as they played at the pace of the game and with 20 minutes remaining they extended their lead to 28-18 when scum half Andy Simms went over for a try converted by Davy.
Kevin Coward, being tracked by Swinton Lions, deservedly won the man of the match with prop Gareth Sherman second and Robert Dooley third.
