Chorley Lynx ...6 Wakefield ...88
CHORLEY Lynx coach Mark Lee feared his worst nightmares would come true as Wakefield ruthlessly turned the screw at a snow covered Victory Park to emphasise the huge gap between a full-time Super League outfit and one from the semi-professional ranks of National League Two in this Challenge Cup fourth round showdown.
Trinity half-backs Jamie Rooney and Ben Jeffries were the destroyers in chief as the Wildcats finished two points shy of equalling their own club record score.
Rooney set a new club points-scoring record with a 36-point haul from three tries and 12 goals from 16 attempts, surpassing Mark Conway's 34-points against Highfield in 1992/93.
Australian Jeffries opened the scoring in the fifth minute and went to demonstrate his awareness and poaching ability with a five-try haul.
An injury crisis and the suspension of full-back Lee Paterson left Lee down to his last 17 fit players and he even considered making a playing comeback himself at the age of 35.
"I feared we would concede 100," he admitted. "They were just too big and fast for us and looked capable of scoring with every set.
"When they led 46-6 at half-time and then scored two tries in their first two sets of the second half I really feared for the worst.
"I have told the players that this game will show how mentally strong they are. Success in life is gained by getting up one more time than you fall down."
Wakefield coach Shane McNally was pleased the game went ahead after an afternoon pitch inspection.
"The conditions were alien to many of the Australian players, but we showed a lot of guts and character," he said.
"I was pretty worried with the conditions before the game but the pitch stood up well and that is huge credit to the groundsman. The referee was happy that the game should go ahead and so were we."
Rooney entered the record books with his last-minute conversion to Jeffries, final try.
Sid Domic's 80-metre touchdown was another Wakefield highlight with Gareth Ellis and Semi Tadualala each scoring twice and Michael Korkidas, David March and Dallas Hood also on the mark.
Lynx captain Chris Newall grabbed his side's consolation six minutes before half-time, Brian Capewell converting.
