THE pieces are fitting together for a new community youth group designed to give children in Preston a chance to take part in sports and leisure activities to keep them away from crime.
Almost 250 people turned up for the launch of Jigsaw on the all-weather pitch at the back of St Teresa's RC Primary School, Downing Street, Preston, last Saturday.
The youth group has been formed for children in Fishwick, Callon and St Matthew's wards to provide things for them to do to keep them away from crime, drugs and to prevent anti-social behaviour.
The police, YMCA, city council, Collingwood Housing and Sports Development, are just some of the organisations which have come forward to help the scheme get off the ground.
Alan Cook, activities development officer for St Matthews at Sports Development, Birley Street, Preston, said:
"This will actively divert youths from crime towards more productive, socially responsible activities."
Many services will be offered, including careers advice and sport and leisure opportunities. Police, army and fire service displays and stalls were set up on the day with face painting, a bouncy castle and a massive football tournament involving more than 160 children.
Competition was fierce with Fishwick Rangers beating Callon Wanderers in the boys' final and The Callonettes romping to victory Fishwick in the girls' competition.
