EXPERTS from the RSPB will lead a Winter Bird Safari around Stocks Reservoir near Slaidburn, on Wednesday, March 10 and there are some places still available.
They will be on the lookout for birds such as short-eared owls, a variety of winter wildfowl and, hopefully, Bowland's elusive hen harriers. On previous safaris, there have been sightings of a great grey shrike.
RSPB conservation officer Pete Wilson said: "On this walk we hope to see many of the species which make the Bowland area so important for birds and wildlife. With luck, walkers may be able to catch a glimpse of the rare hen harrier, a bird that has its English breeding stronghold in Bowland." There will be a charge of £5 and all profits go to benefit Bowland schools in their environmental work.
Booking is essential and should be made by ringing the RSPB's Anna Sugrue between 9am and 5.15pm Monday- Friday on 01484 861148.
The all-day walk starts at 10am, lasts five to six hours and covers steep, hilly terrain, so a reasonable degree of fitness is required.
