FOOTBALLERS of the future are to be given an educational boost thanks to links forged between Burnley Football Club and the town's college.
A new 'Centre of Football Excellence' has been established to give talented young players the opportunity to receive quality training at Burnley FC while gaining academic qualifications at Burnley College.
And the move has today been described as a "major breakthrough'" by Burnley Football Club Manager Stan Ternent.
The initiative was launched after the Professional Footballers Association raised concerns about the rising fallout rate of young players.
A PFA spokesperson said: "At least 75 per cent of youngsters who are taken on by professional clubs fail to make the grade.
"We are concerned that many young players will find themselves released from their club without any other career options or qualifications."
The centre was launched yesterday by Stan Ternent, Dave Edmundson, Chief Executive of Burnley FC, Paula Mitchell, curriculum manager for sports studies and Hugh Bramwell, deputy principal of Burnley College.
The football club will hold trials in April to find the club's next Robbie Blake. Successful players will be taken on under the club's supervision in September when they will start their study at the college.
Young hopefuls at Burnley FC will get expert coaching and compete for the Centre of Football Excellence team who will compete in the English Colleges Football League. Players will also be eligible for national representative honours.
The Centre of Excellence scheme is open to both male and female applicants of school leaving age. They can study any of the subjects that are on offer at the college.
Stan Ternent said: "Sadly too many youngsters end up on the scrap heap if they are unable to make the grade in football.
"This scheme will positively help them gain qualifications for other jobs or professions as a back-up."
John Smith, College Principal, added: "We are very proud of our close links with Burnley Football Club. This exciting new programme offers supportive educational opportunities to potential professional players at a high achieving college that is within walking distance of the club."
Young people wanting to take part in the Centre of Football Excellence should either pick up an application form from their school or from student services at Burnley College on 01282 711222.
