LANCASTER people are being asked to help plant a new wildlife hedge at an animal sanctuary in Scotforth.

Community group Treesponsibility is organising tree planting days this Saturday and on Saturday, March 6, at Animal Care - with more than 500 trees waiting for willing hands to put them into the ground.

The group's Ali Barton says: "Everybody loves to see finches and sparrows but many people don't realise these birds are under threat. Modern farming means there are a lot fewer hedges around to provide food and shelter than even a decade ago.

"With spring on its way, this is a good time to go outside and do something for the local wildlife. The new hedge will provide food and shelter for not only for birds, but also butterflies and hedgehogs."

This is the second Treesponsibility planting campaign at Animal Care, a charity that looks after homeless and ill-treated domestic animals.

Site manager Stephen Wakelin says: "We've got quite a bit of land here, that we can use to plant trees and encourage wildlife. All the trees planted last year are doing very well and you can already see a difference."

The tree planting group says anyone who would like to help can find out more by calling 01524-840028 or checking on the website at www.seedsforchange.org.uk/trees.

Fair trade snacks and cups of tea will be provided all weekend.
