CIVIC leaders in Blackburn with Darwen were today mourning the death of a colleague, Labour stalwart Mary Leaver.
The former mayor has died after suffering a suspected brain haemorrhage.
Coun Leaver, who represented the Earcroft ward for Labour, passed away on Sunday night, aged 73.
A spokesman for Blackburn with Darwen Council said Mrs Leaver had been a respected member of the council and would be missed by everyone who knew her.
Coun Leaver was first elected as a councillor in 1987 and has also served Queen's Park ward. She was mayor in 1996-1997.
She remained an active member of the council and was a member of a scrutiny committee.
A widow, Coun Leaver spent more than 20 years in the manufacturing industry working for Lucas, Mullard and Rists Wires and Cables.
She was also a former member of the GMB union.
Coun Leaver had seven children and several grandchildren.
Rossendale and Darwen Janet Anderson MP said: "I was shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden death of Mary Leaver.
"I have been lucky enough to count Mary as a friend for almost 30 years. Mary worked tirelessly for all those she served as a councillor, both in Blackburn and Darwen.
"She will be sorely missed by us all. Our thoughts and heartfelt sympathy go to her family."
