BURY-Pedalsport riders made the ideal start to the Northern Fours and Junior League when the first round of the season-long competition got under way at Goshen track last Sunday.
The weather was kind and a good turnout of riders from most clubs ensured that all six events produced good competitive sport and an enjoyable afternoon.
The Junior League started with the under-13s, a category that Bury have been particularly weak in during recent seasons, but with six contestants this time and a brilliant 16-point maximum from Will Collins, the home club were off to a flyer with 65 points, well ahead of all the opposing teams.
Under-13 scorers for Bury: Will Collins 16; Chris Dyson 12; David Parrish 11; Ryan O'Shea 9; Michael Collins 9; Declan O'Shea 8.
The First Fours League match involved both Bury sides, the B team riding as Goshen. The A team built up a convincing lead, despite Heckmondwike rider, James Carter, completing his rides unbeaten, as Bury had a solid four on duty and all four rode well.
Bury 51: Neil Howarth 15; Fred Rothwell 13; Paul Dyson 11; Steve Muff 11; David Parrish (res) 1.
Heckmondwike 39, Goshen 36: Steve Mann 10; Scott Jarman 9; Tom Doyle 9; John Whiting 8.
Astley and Tyldesley 33.
Only two Bury riders contested the under-16 group, Chris Parrish scoring 10 and Ashley Simpson 8, but Bury retained their lead in the Junior League.
In the second fours match Goshen, as the host team, were in action again but Tameside 59, Sheffield 40, Hull 32, all proved too strong for their 27 points.
Goshen scorers: John Whiting 11; Tom Doyle 6; Steve Mann 5; Chris Parrish 3; Michael Parrish 2.
The final events combined the under-19 and the combination categories, and over 20 heats the three Bury riders involved dominated the proceedings.
Under-16: Tom Doyle 16 max; Michael Parrish 9; Combination: Steve Mann 16 max.
Final Junior League table after round one: Bury 129; Astley & Tyldesley 112; Sheffield 88; Hull 54; Tameside 28.
On Sunday, the Bury squad are away at Birmingham for combined National League and Midland/North Regional League fixtures. Second team 2pm, first team 3pm.
