COLNE folk have a chance to see the good - and bad - elements of their day-to-day lives on display in the town centre from today.

The Picture Perfect? exhibition is the result of project run with residents on the North Valley estate where people were given disposable cameras to take out into the community.

Hundreds of photographs on the themes of people, places, environments and fun were submitted by residents involved in the project, which was run by Groundwork and the European-funded Five Wards Arts and Cultural Project.

They included artistic images of local beauty spots, family group photos, snaps of grot spots in the area and pictures of people having fun in the streets.

The pictures have already been displayed in the North Valley Community Centre and at the Mid-Pennine Arts Gallery in Burnley and now they will return to the centre of Colne.

The display will be on view in the glass exhibition area at the front of the market hall until April 18.

Sue Devonport, 51, of Rimington Avenue, has lived on the estate for 32 years and took three of the enlarged photographs in the display.

Seeing her work unveiled at the community centre, she said: "The whole project was great fun and it definitely got people talking to each other.

"It's interesting to see the different things people have chosen to include in their photographs, the good and bad things about the area."

Groundwork project organiser Ruth Mackie said: "We wanted to help bring the community together and get people to take an interest in their area, and it's certainly worked.

"It's brought people of all ages together because the young people can see themselves in many of the pictures."

Plans are being made for a similar project in Waterside later this year. Anyone interested in taking part should call Ruth Mackie on 01282 430433 or Lucy Bergman on 01282 421986.
