THE hard work of a volunteer group to brighten up a Pendle park can be seen now that the bulbs they planted have bloomed.

Last year the Friends of Walverden Park received a grant from the Green Partnership Awards to transform a tree-covered area of the park in Nelson, into a traditional English woodland.

The scheme, run by Lancashire County Council, Pendle Borough Council and United Utilities, helps community groups and schools carry out practical projects to improve their environment by handing out grants and advice.

Supported by residents, children from St John Southworth Church and volunteers from Burnley and Pendle Green Space, the group planted bulbs that included English bluebells, daffodils, snowdrops and wood anemones to add a splash of colour.

Keith Chadwick, chairman of the Friends of Walverden Park, said: "By brightening up the park we hope that more and more people will be able to enjoy what will become a green oasis in an otherwise built up area of Nelson."
