A FLAG will be flying high to celebrate Morecambe scooping a prestigious award for having top-notch facilities, clean sands and water.
The resort's South Beach has won its first Seaside Award - recognising that it has stepped up water safety, cleaned up the sands and been ranked among the top 10 UK resorts.
The Environment Agency took at least 20 separate samples of Bay water before giving Morecambe the nod for bathing water quality. And so Lancaster City Council was able to apply to fly the Seaside Award flag.
The beach between the Battery and Stone Jetty secured the honours after impressing judges with its high standard of cleanliness, safety and information for visitors.
Promenade manager Sharon Wilson says Morecambe Bay is internationally known for its marine and bird life - but is now likely to become even more popular.
"This award is welcome news. People do look for the flag and hopefully this will give people more confidence in using the beach."
Cllr Ron Sands, the city's Cabinet member for tourism, says: "The Seaside Award is great news for Morecambe. This is the first time we have applied for this award and to achieve it in the first year is excellent."
