CASH point users are being warned about a card-cloning scam as thieves fit hi-tech devices to supermarket machines.
Police have raised the alarm after automatic teller machines (ATMs) were targeted at two Morecambe supermarkets.
A sophisticated device which could read and record card details was fitted to the card slot on both occasions.
This device does not stop people withdrawing cash. But it records the card's electronic details, which can then be put onto new cards.
"If there is anything suspicious about the machine, walk away and ring the police," says PC Phil Corris, of Morecambe's crime prevention office.
"They appear to be targeting supermarkets. It could be one team moving around with one device to different machines.
"The device could only be in place for a short time. It is not something they would leave in for days because then it would be painfully obvious.
"Morrisons in Morecambe was targeted last week but it was spotted by a member of staff. The machine next to it had been blocked with paper, forcing people to use the other one. It may have happened at Asda as well."
Warning signs could include an enlarged card slot reader or one which looks 'stuck' on to the machine (as pictured).
Also look for any extra swipe card mechanism attached to the machine or for any holes drilled above the keypad.
Be suspicious if the card sticks when you try to remove it, or if the ATM is the only one working in a row of machines.
