A GROUNDBREAKING environmental project in Blackpool has been boosted with a £132,000 Government grant.
Work is nearing completion on the new Solaris environment centre at the former Harrowside Solarium, and the Energy Saving Trust's grant will pay for 145 solar panels as part of the design.
The trust's chief executive, Philip Sellwood, said: "The Solaris development is a great example of how modern green technology can be attractively integrated into a period building.
"Solar power can play an important role in generating clean, sustainable energy in the UK and it is encouraging that community schemes such as Solaris, are helping to spread this message."
Cllr Fred Jackson, Blackpool Council's urban environment portfolio holder, added: "Blackpool Borough Council's Energy Action Plan aims to increase energy efficiency within the town. The Solaris project has a number of aims. It will be the foundation stone for the education and promotion of sustainable design and the incorporation of renewable energy technology. It's a demonstration of the positive effects solar power can play in the community.
"We have already been approached by local residents and businesses which have seen or heard about the project and want to know how they can incorporate similar technologies into their building. Local authorities have a responsibility to lead the way in the promotion of sustainable design practices and we urge others to follow out example."
The £1.75m Solaris project will transform the derelict 1938 art deco solarium into a 'Centre of Excellence' for the environment, including a satellite unit to Lancaster university's new environment centre, a community exhibition centre and business and enterprise premises for local firms.
