THE curtain may be about to come down on smokers who light up in public in Lancaster.

Lancaster City Council is throwing its weight behind a national no-smoking initiative by backing the 'Smoke Free North West' project.

It aims to increase the number of places that are 100 per cent smoke free.

The action group says it is concerned at the number of people who have to work in smoke filled environments because smoke worsens existing health problems such as asthma.

A web-based directory is being prepared, giving details of all eating and drinking establishments in the county which are smoke free.

Further details on smoking at work are available from the city council's environmental health team on 01524-582731.
