AS THOUSANDS of copies of "Wyre Voice" drop through letterboxes in Wyre, Cllr Geoff Horrocks, Leader of the Wyre Labour Group reacted with horror.
What a sham. The Leader of Wyre Council Alan Vincent has the cheek to say that they have listened to what the people of Wyre have said and are concentrating on those areas which are important to them.
Out of 12 items listed no fewer than 8 are things that the council is legally obliged to do by Central Government.
100% of authority's buildings open to the public are suitable for and accessible to disabled people. LEGAL REQUIREMENT.
Conduct a Regional Assembly referendum and local government referendum in October 2004. LEGAL REQUIREMENT.
Place draft Local Plan on deposit for public consultation. LEGAL REQUIREMENT.
Work with partner agencies, community representatives etc.i.e. Local Strategic Partnership. LEGAL REQUIREMENT.
Introduce Decriminalised Parking Enforcement. LEGAL REQUIREMENT.
Implement a new system of licensing in accord with the Licensing Act 2003. LEGAL REQUIREMENT.
Continue to reduce the amount of waste produced and further enhance the collection of dry recyclables. LEGAL REQUIREMENT.
Reduce the length of stay in B&B accommodation for families who are unintentionally homeless and in priority need. LEGAL REQUIREMENT.
So what are we left with? Phase 2 of the Cleveleys Sea Wall, Garstang Walking Festival, an attempt to offload the responsibility for the Marine Hall and a Passport to Leisure, which is an idea borrowed from the previous Labour administration.
So what did the public say? Don't sell the Beach Bungalows. Don't sell Marsh Mill,
Don't sell Jubilee Gardens. Response IGNORE IT
Not a mention of what people want, like the swimming pool and cinema promised by Tory councillors in Jubilee ward (forgotten once they were elected). No mention of safe play areas for children. No mention of CCTV to make the streets safer and cleaner. No action to stop fly tipping except cutting 1 Community Warden.
So much for a listening council. It's time Cllr Vincent and his cronies started listening or else they will get a nasty surprise at the next election.
Cllr Geoff Horrocks
Leader of Wyre Labour Group.
