A CUB scout group from Whitefield proved they were "poles" apart from their peers when they won the annual Totem Competition.

A six-strong team from the 25th Prestwich and Whitefield St Bernadette's Cub Scouts are now proud owners of the Totem trophy after competing against several other cub packs in the area.

Each year, the groups take part in an afternoon of activities, such as tracking, mapping and compass skills and the team with the most points at the end of the event is announced as overall winner.

Akela Margaret Bromelow said: "I am really pleased with them and they were delighted to win the trophy. The last time we won was a few years ago so we will be getting our cub pack name inscribed on the trophy as soon as possible."

As well as the trophy, which they look after for 12 months, the six boys were presented with a medal to keep.

The youngsters all attend cub meetings in the scout hut in Selby Avenue, Whitefield.
