A DINNER and disco will celebrate the 50th year of the community nurses amenity fund.
The fund was founded as the Blackburn District Nurses Amenity Fund Charity in 1954 to collect donations from grateful patients and their relatives.
At that time, the money was used to provide what were considered to be luxuries such as hair dos, blankets, Christmas and retirement gifts.
By 1990, with help from sponsors, the fund provided finances for overseas scholarships to places such as Finland, Canada, Australia and Africa.
Since 1996, the award has been in the form of a Community Nurse of the Year Award where cash prizes have been allocated to enable staff to pursue further studies.
The celebration for nursing staff employed by the Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Primary Care Trust will be held at Mytton Fold Farm Hotel on May 7.
