ONE OF the reasons the Clarets lacked their usual sting against Watford this week can now be explained - club mascot Bertie Bee was ill.
The popular mascot was struck down with a mystery bug on the eve of Monday's crucial Turf Moor clash.
He had to leave the job of lifting the spirits of supporters to his sidekick Bumble Bee. Burnley lost 3-2.
Club officials have now moved to reassure fans that Bertie has made a full recovery.
And he will not be affected by voluntary redundancies due to be announced in the next few weeks.
A club spokesman added: "It's not the first time Bertie has missed a game but it is quite a rare occurance.
"He was not feeling very well so he had to miss the game.
"Burnley fans will be glad to hear that he will be back for the Wimbledon game next Tuesday night."
