JUDGES from the National Transport Awards are to visit Lancashire next month after Lancashire County Council was shortlisted in five separate categories.

The national awards are the most highly regarded in the transport world and, as well as four nominations in specialist categories, Lancashire County Council has been shortlisted as Local Transport Authority of the Year.

Judges will visit in May to view road safety schemes, innovative bus and train link-ups, real-time bus stops that are linked to satellites and buses and new means of urban traffic management.

Lancashire is up against Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Reading in the main Local Transport Authority of the Year category.

Coun Jean Yates, cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: "These awards are by no means in the bag but we will be pulling out all the stops to impress the judges that we have the national and international networks and the innovation to make a difference.

"It is a major achievement for any local authority just to make the shortlist in so many categories."
