LANCASHIRE County Council has set out its plans for school organisation until 2008.

The strategy for allocating places and long-term development has been detailed in the School Organisation Action Plan.

The review takes into account a predicted decline in the number of schoolchildren expected to be studying in the area by 2007.

There are currently 95,000 primary pupils and 76,000 secondary-aged children being educated under Lancashire's LEA.

This figure is expected to drop to 92,000 primary and 75,000 at secondary level in the next three years.

The Education Act 2002 has also brought in changes to the admissions policy for schools. Denominational schools are no longer able to limit the number of non-denominational students.

However, the growth of sixth form students is expected to continue for two years. Schools which are deemed to be very good will be allowed to expand even where there is no 'basic need' - where there are enough school places.

A consultation period for people to send their comments on the school organisational plan is in place until the end of the month.
