A GROUP of young volunteers who gave Rossendale Hospice a facelift are to receive personal commendations for their dedication.
Fire and Prince's Trust chiefs are to praise the efforts of the volunteers from the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service's Prince's Trust team at a special ceremony at the Astoria, Rawtenstall, tonight.
The eight-strong team from across Rossendale carried out a two-week community project to modernise the hospice for users and visitors.
As part of the 12-week course to help build their self-esteem and personal development, the youngsters also used their powers of persuasion to encourage local businesses to donate materials.
King Paints of Rawtenstall stepped in after various meetings and consultations with the eight-strong group of negotiators to donate all the paints and materials needed for the job.
Marie Earnshaw, of the hospice fundraising department, said: "The group worked really hard during their time at the hospice.
"They have helped to brighten up the place for patients for which we are eternally grateful."
The Prince's Trust encourages people of varying abilities and social backgrounds to attend the self-development course.
Working people and unemployed volunteers, aged between 16 and 25, are given the chance to develop life skills in their local community.
Christine Odlum, Rossendale Prince's Trust team leader, said: "This is the first time a project of this kind has been carried out in Rossendale which has proved to be extremely successful.
"The group not only completed the community project at the hospice but they also held various fundraising events, including a sponsored silence and a one-mile fire engine pull which raised £400. The money was used to take a group of young carers out on a bowling and Camelot trip.
"It helped give these young people who have had difficulties in their own lives a sense of being responsible for someone else and a sense of achievement."
The Mayor of Rossendale, Coun Eileen Kershaw, and her deputy, Coun June Foreshaw, will be on hand to dish out awards.
Fire chief Peter Holland will be accompanied by hospice manager Helana Young and Rossendale and Darwen MP Janet Anderson to join in the congratulations.
