ATHERTON Scout headquarters took on the role of a radio station when 2nd Atherton Scouts went on the air with the help of West Manchester Radio Club.
Using the club call signs GX6FSA and GX4MWC from their Leigh Road HQ, the scouts tuned in to short wave bands and sent greetings to other amateur radio stations in Britain and overseas and also learned Morse code.
The event was part of National Science Week and numerous operators remarked on the Scouts proficiency with their newly acquired radio skills.
West Manchester radio Club president Don Aitchison presented communication badges to Thomas Cleverly, Ben Gill, Sam Shaw, Daniel Lee, Adam McGaughey, Thomas Gerrard, Thomas Powell and Daniel Stout.
Mr Aitchison said if there was demand he would arrange for a radio amateur foundation course so Scouts might take a more active role.
WMRC meets on Thursday nights at Astley and Tyldesley Miners Welfare Club, Gin Pit where those with an interest in becoming a radio amateur are always welcome.
