Young teachers leave university saddled with debts of up to £15,000, a survey shows.
Tuition fees and student loans hit students on "traditional" four-year Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree courses the hardest, the Association of Teachers and Lecturers poll showed.
Four out of 10 said they would not have become teachers if they had been forced to pay top-up fees back after they graduated, as will apply from 2006.
The ATL polled 200 of its student members, who were taking BEd degrees and postgraduate certificate of education (PGCE) courses
