So many times the premier division has gone down to the final game and so many times one player has saved the day. So this month we pay homage to a goalkeeper who was...well..out of this world.
H & T Pawnbrokers went into their game against Galligreaves needing a win. Galligreaves however needed just a draw to wrestle the championship crown away from their opponents.
Galligreaves must have thought it was going to be one of those days when attack after attack ended with either goalkeepr Kirk Russell pulling off a save or with Raymond Booth (who picked up an injury in the third minute) shepherding the ball into touch. Kirk was out in outstanding form throughout the match and it wouldn't have mattered if the nets were fifty foot wide - he would not let Galligreaves pass.
Under-rated and ever reliable Zuber Patel also looked a different class.
A goaless result would have suited Galligreaves but their were ominous signs of a H & T goal. Twice Suhail Butt came to Galligreaves rescue which included a goal line clearance.
Mid-way through the second-half H & T took the lead with a well taken goal by Karl Egan. They doubled their lead through player / manager Franko before Fiaz Ahmed pulled one back for Galligreaves. But it was all too little too late.
There were chants of 'you'll never win the league' from the terraces but H and T must be thinking how they pulled this off without the likes of Javed Feroze, Mark Holdsworth, Imran Akujy or Paul Egan in the ranks.
