JERSEY JUMPERS: Fed up with heavy taxes, three local men left Bury to live and work in what they described as "the promised land". . . Jersey.
Brothers Howard (21) and David Williams (25) of Cotswold Crescent, Bury, and Tony Martin (21) from Kenmore Road, Whitefield, said the standard income tax in Jersey was much lower and the absence of VAT would mean a great saving. Howard and Tony were both car mechanics and planned to carry on with the same line of work on the island while David hoped to resume his career as a sales representative.
STAFF SEE RED: To counter mounting abuse from the public and some patients, staff at Bury's hospitals were to become the first into the country to issue referee-style yellow caution cards, warning people about their behaviour.
11-PLUS SUBTRACTION: Bury today said farewell to the 11-Plus examinations as more than 2,500 pupils across the borough sat the exam for the very last time. The test was being abolished in readiness for the changeover to comprehensive education in September 1979.
