TYLDESLEY RU Knights secured the runners-up spot in the North West RU Second Division with a 9-5 away victory at a peculiarly strong Burnley.
The home side decided that discretion was the better part of valour and paraded a near full strength first team masquerading as their second team.
Undauted Tyldesley went about their task manfully and with purpose and despite allowing Burnley to score an unconverted try, three Fraser Mackintosh penalties sealed an excellent away win and the second spot in the league.
Tyldesley Dragons were let down again by Burnley who failed for the second time this season to raise a side. Thankfully neighbours Leigh Hawks stepped in and served up an excellent game of rugby for the large crowd as the lead change hands several times before Tyldesley ran out 16-11 winners.
There were excellent performances from Bill Elliott, Andrew Oakden and Tony Meakin in the forwards and 18 year old Andrew Smith scored a fine try and kicked two well taken penalties.
This Saturday Tyldesley's first three senior sides take on Rossendale all in the league while the fourths await opposition from the fixtures pool.
