STILL on a high after watching Sedgley gain promotion to National One after Saturday's 27-17 win over Doncaster, Tigers' president Geoff Roberts can now almost taste a mouth watering double.

"I've just about come down off the ceiling!" he said after watching his side beat Liverpool St Helens 14-10 on Tuesday in the Lancashire Cup Semis, to book their place in the final, where they will meet Vale of Lune on Saturday May 23, at Preston Grasshoppers' Lightfoot Green ground.

"On Saturday we played some scintillating rugby, and I didn't didn't really appreciate how well we played until I watched the game tape.

"Tuesday's cup game was very different, but we won and our season isn't over yet."

Before the cup final in May, Sedgley have one remaining league fixture, away to Rugby Lions on Saturday April 24.

Victory will guarantee they go up as champions, ahead of closet rivals Nottingham, who are just one point behind them.

Saturday's win elevates the Whitefield outfit to Manchester's second most senior club, with only the Zurich Premiership's Sale Sharks ahead of them in the the local pecking order.

The Tigers are now ranked third in the North West, and they will face the club ahead of them - Orrell - next season in National One.

And being in National One - the level directly below Sale - puts the Tigers in the country's top 26, from over 1,200 nationally.

All of which puts the club's on-field achievement into context, which Roberts is only too quick to clarify: "We're talking two promotions and one Lancashire Cup, with the possibility of another, within four years," he said.

But the club will not be resting on its laurels.

Apart from team changes, very little will change at Park Lane next season.

"We've got a young squad which we will obviously have to add to," said Roberts.

"The guys we bring in will have to be quality, we have to have strength in depth.

"But our facilities are already better than most of the clubs we'll be coming up against next season.

"I've heard they don't go in too much for match day hospitality in National One.

"Well, we will continue to provide the services and facilities we always have.

"We are going to remain a warm, welcoming, family-friendly club, as well as continuing to be successful on the pitch."
