HE'S rubbed shoulders with the Beatles, mixed Marilyn Monroe with the Mona Lisa and now one of the world's most famous artists is brightening up Blackpool prom.
Sir Peter Blake was in town yesterday (Wednesday) for the unveiling of his first works of public art at Blackpool's open-air Great Promenade Show, south shore.
Best known for designing the iconic cover of the Beatles' classic album, Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Sir Peter has designed two 10ft sculptures on a 'fantasy circus' theme.
His past work includes the artwork for the Live Aid concert and silkscreen prints featuring Marilyn Monroe with the Mona Lisa.
Sir Peter said: "I wanted to capture the spirit of Blackpool and the spirit of the circus.
"Blackpool is an entertainment town and the sculptures fit the idea that Blackpool is a place where you come to have fun"
The sculptures, 'Four Man Up' and 'Equestrian Act,' were unveiled at a special ceremony involving stars from Blackpool Pleasure Beach's circus spectacular, Eclipse, and children from Blackpool's circus school.
Cllr David Owen, Blackpool Council's portfolio holder for culture and leisure, said: "Sir Peter's work is nothing short of a cultural coup for Blackpool. The town has had a magnificent history with the circus over many decades."
Funding for the sculptures came from the North West Development Agency, whose director of development, Helen France, said: "The NWDA is pleased to have supported this major piece of artwork which demonstrates the artistic strength of the region and will sit along side Blackpool's many attractions.
"It is great to see such a renowned and successful artist contributing to one of the region's tourism assets."
The Great Promenade Show now has eight installations, all aimed at reflecting aspects of the resort's character.
Some, such as the world's largest mirrorball, have proved popular with visitors and locals. Others have been less successful -- The Frankenstein Project, was dubbed an 'eyesore' and vandalised last year.
The Great Promenade Show received another boost last week when it was named on the short-list for the North West Business Environment Award in the Waterside Regeneration category. The winner will be announced at a prestigious ceremony at Bolton's Reebok Stadium next Friday (April 23).
