A BURY woman was left with a bad taste when she bit into a custard doughnut to discover it contained apple to which she is allergic.
Although Mrs Kerry Rodzoch spat out the slice, the apple caused stinging to her throat, and she feared the reaction could have been worse had she swallowed the whole doughnut.
Although she received an apology from Tesco, which supplied the doughnut, Kerry and her husband, of White Street, Elton, have accused the company of virtually ignoring their concerns. They want an assurance that the mis-labelling will not happen again, safeguarding others who have an apple allergy.
The doughnut had been bought from the Tesco Express store in Bolton Road, Bury.
Husband Mirek said: "We got a four-line letter back from the company along with a £20 voucher. It wasn't really a nice apology and to me it was an insult. It is as if we've been fobbed off. Tesco don't seem to be taking the matter seriously."
He added: "What we really wanted was a promise from the company that the same thing wouldn't happen again. My wife spat out the doughnut after tasting the apple. But she had a burning sensation in her throat and had a sickly feeling.
"Tesco haven't told us what they are doing about the mis-labelling and whether they are carrying out checks on other, similar doughnuts which are their own brand. No-one from Tesco has told us it won't happen again."
A spokeswoman for Tesco said the doughnuts had been baked in-store and that "human error" was responsible for the labelling mistake.
"The customer service manager has spoken to the bakery manager with a view to being more vigilant and making sure such a thing never happens again."
