CLITHEROE returned to the top of the table following this crucial derby win and now know that just one victory from their last two games will secure them the league title.
A hard working team ethic was the platform for the three points, which means three more over Newcastle Town at Shawbridge on Saturday would see the Blues crowned North West Counties Division One champions.
Barrie Hart saw an early effort cleared off the line before Gary Jackson put Clitheroe in front on 28 minutes. Lee Cryer's neat turn and shot was blocked but the ball fell kindly to Jackson who was able to expertly fire home.
Ramsbottom created little in the way of goalmouth chances during the opening period and Jackson and Cryer both had opportunities to increase the lead before the interval.
Jackson scored his and Clitheroe's second goal on 60 minutes following smart play from a free kick.
Martin Aspinwall was quickly released down the left flank and his accurate cross was forced home by the Blues striker.
Ramsbottom then had their best spell of the game and hit the post from a free kick then, moments later, saw a header cannon back off the crossbar.
Clitheroe showed their championship potential though as they saw out the remainder of the game and now look forward to hosting Newcastle Town this weekend and the possibility of sealing the title.
