HORSE racing fans in Bury may soon have a racecourse on their doorstep.
Plans have been unveiled for a £100 million course to be built on a 1,700 acre site at Salford Forest Park in Worsley and Boothstown.
It would boast the first all weather racing track in the north, a 6,000 capacity grandstand, an 18-hole golf course, and a four-star hotel, An entrance would be created off the Junction 13 slip road of the M60.
The ambitious plan has been drawn up by Peel Holdings and a formal application is due to be submitted to Salford Council within the next two years.
At an official unveiling of the plans, former top jockey Willie Carson said: "This is a very exciting thing for the people of Manchester. More than 2.2 million people in Salford and Manchester said they want a racecourse, so the backing is there. I hope the plans go ahead".
Haydock Park is currently the nearest venue for local racegoers.
