HEALTH bosses in East Lancashire's hospitals were today celebrating after securing a £100,000 reward.
The money is part of a national incentive scheme to increase the number of patients treated within four hours in accident and emergency departments.
The target - to see and treat or admit 94 per cent of patients within four hours - was easily met by East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs the hospitals locally.
Health Secretary John Reid today announced the cash bonanza.
One of the secrets of the Trust's success was the introduction of a a system at Burnley General Hospital. Patients with minor injuries are seen and treated straight away, rather than being assessed and prioritised before being treated. At Blackburn Royal Infirmary, a new system has also been introduced with special cubicles set aside, manned by doctors and nurse practitioners, specifically for minor injuries.
But hospital bosses have not yet decided how the money will be spent.
Richard Gildert, acting chief executive, said: "This is great news which reflects the enormous commitment and dedication of our staff.
"Staff have been working all year round to reach this target which brings about real benefits for patients."
Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs accident and emergency departments at Chorley and South Ribble and Royal Preston hospitals also achieved the target.
