THE workforce at an Accrington's Woodnook Bleaching and Dyeing company is to be halved, it has been announced

Up to 50 jobs could be lost at the firm, part of Hilden manufacturing. Bosses say they are being forced to take the drastic measure because of a decline and low profit margins in one part of its business.

The company, based in Mount Street, will now concentrate on key group products.

Craig Hargreaves, divisional managing director, said: "Due to the decline and low profit margins of the commission finishing part of the business a reduction in production capacity will be implemented with restructuring in all departments.

"The work force will be reduced by 50 per cent by July, Woodnook Bleaching and Dyeing Company will now concentrate on key group products.

"The decision has been deferred as long as possible but we have no other option to safeguard the remaining employees positions and to ensure the future cost-effective operation of the company."

The job losses will be felt in all departments but will hit nightshift and weekend working the hardest. Redundancies will take place by the annual holiday in mid July.

The firm currently employs 97 staff and specialises in textile finishing operation, preparing and dyeing textiles as woven goods for use in garments, tableware, furnishings and industrial textiles.
