THE outcome of the North West Counties League will go to the final game of the season after the Blues suffered a disappointing home defeat.
With second placed Mossley being held to a draw, Clitheroe need just a point from their final game of the season at Nantwich next Saturday to secure the title.
A goal from Ashley Miller on 67 minutes settled this game as he ran through the Clitheroe defence to fire home.
The home side were left reflecting on what could have been, with three good goalscoring opportunities going begging in the first 15 minutes.
On eight minutes, a first time Lee Cryer shot from a tight angle went over the bar and then moments later Cryer was denied by a fine save from Scott Bentley.
Gary Jackson also could have settled any nerves but his close range header was directed directly at the Newcastle keeper.
Newcastle failed to create many first half chances but were twice denied by the crossbar in the second half before they finally took the lead.
Russell Clarke came closest to scoring for the Blues on 60 minutes, but Bentley smartly saved his rasping 35-yard shot.
Clitheroe, though, still hold their destiny firmly in their own hands and will hope to finally get their hands on the title next Saturday.
