St Peter's Primary School are the talk of the town after reaching the national finals of the Sainsbury's English Schools FA Cup.

The Blackburn school flew the flag for East Lancashire after taking part in the finals at the National Sports Centre in Lilleshall on Saturday.

The super Saints, based in the Mill Hill area of Blackburn, competed against seven other regional winners and runners-up from across the country.

And while they failed to qualify from the group stages on the day, it was still a fantastic achievement as hundreds of schools took part in the tournament at town, county and regional finals.

Teacher Marcia Dixon said: "It was a really good day and an excellent experience for them.

"It was very sunny and we'd never been to Lilleshall before but were impressed by it. It was also nice to meet up with teams from all over the country.

"We knew we had a talented football team who had a chance of progressing through the early rounds but we never thought we would get this far in the tournament.

"To reach the national finals is brilliant and we are all really proud of the players.

"We would like to do it all again."

St Peter's journey to the national finals started after they entered and won the Blackburn heat of the six-a-side competition.

They then travelled to Manchester for the county finals, which they also won, and represented Lancashire in the Northern section stage.

The talented squad included Matthew Lambe, Connor Doherty, Stephen Eddleston, Gabriel Hamell, John Kearns, Alex Needham, Nathan Clegg and Michael Hogan.

The competition has been backed by Portsmouth's Teddy Sheringham, who has been helping children with fitness and nutrition as part of Sainsbury's commitment to healthy eating.
