A DRUG addict who stole alcohol told magistrates he had "turned to beer" because his life was chaotic.
James Andrew Greenwood, 34, said he had been refused rehab and there had been a lot of rows in the family. He said he was now on methadone and had got a place at a clinic in Scarborough.
Greenwood, of Penistone Street, Burnley, admitted theft on March 4 and two counts of failing to surrender. He was given a six-month community rehabilitation order and must pay £12.99 compensation, with £40 costs.
The court was told the defendant helped himself to a bottle of vodka from Bacup Co-op stores and two bottles of brandy from Marks and Spencer.
Greenwood told the court he committed the offences when his life was chaotic and he was sorry.
