A DANGEROUS sex offender - believed to be a serious threat to children - was last night caught in Colne.

Police said the appeal for witnesses through the Lancashire Evening Telegraph had proved vital in finding convicted Craig Preece.

A member of the public recognised him in Nelson Street, Colne, after his picture was published yesterday, detectives revealed.

Preece, 40, was thought to be in either Blackburn or Darwen as he had connections in those towns.

He was described by police as posing a danger to young boys and members of the public were warned not to approach him.

Preece had been released from prison on licence for good behaviour. But after breaking the conditions, he can expect to return to jail to complete his sentence.

He was being questioned by police at Burnley police station today.

Detective Inspector Steve Harrison said: "We would like to thank the media for all the help they have given us to bring this matter to a successful conclusion.

"We would also like to thank the public who have taken the time to ring in with the information.

"We are very grateful for their assistance."

Preece had fled a hostel in West Yorkshire at 9.55pm on Friday. Police took the unusual step of releasing his photo for an appeal because they said he was dangerous.

Preece was spotted by many residents because of his distinctive features - he is 5ft 6in, with receding hair, wears steel-rimmed glasses and walks with a limp.
