BRENT Peters is calling for the North West Counties League Challenge Cup final to be switched to the final Saturday of the season.

The Bacup Borough boss led his side to the trophy with a 3-0 victory at Southport against Newcastle Town on Thursday but it seriously hampered preparation for their league game at Stone Dominoes just two days later.

After the 1-0 defeat, Peters said: "I think the league management committee should seriously look at the final being played on a Saturday at the conclusion of the league season.

"As it happened, the result had no bearing on promotion or relegation issues but it could have, and that would have been unfair.

'I had experienced players missing like captain Steve Stott and me and my assistant were named on the bench."

The cup victory kept up East Lancashire's hopes of a remarkable clean sweep in the league's four main competitions.

Bacup won the Challenge Cup and the second division title went to Colne, who meet Great Harwood next week in the Division Two Trophy final.

If Clitheroe get the point they need for the first division championship this weekend then the area will be celebrating a monopoly of the major prizes.

But Peters is proud just to have the Challenge Cup back in the Rossendale valley after a decade's absence.

He said: "It's great for me because I'm born and bred in the valley and won it with Rossendale 10 years ago. So to bring it back with Bacup is tremendous."

Memories of Bacup's successful cup run will be stirred in the final two league games of the season, at Warrington Town tonight then at home to the same side on Saturday.

Warrington were the team they beat in the semi-final, winning both the home and away legs.
