A CHARITY football match between a Manchester United side and Rossendale United attracted more than 1,000 spectators in memory of tragic David Taylor.

Manchester United and England ace Phil Neville dedicated a plaque in David's memory before the match.

And a nine-goal thriller saw fans captivated at Rossendale's Dark Lane Ground, in Newchurch, last night. The final score finished 7-2 to Red Devils' reserves and youth squad, which included first team star Kieran Richardson.

The charity event is expected to have raised around £10,000 for the David Taylor Memorial Fund.

David, 25, died following an assault in Rawtenstall, on July 17. After his death, various groups started raising money and the fund was born. David's parents, David and Caroline, were at the match with David's twin, James, and brother Robert.

His father, who lives at Greendale Avenue, Newchurch, said: "We are overwhelmed by the amount of support that we have received since David's death and this is the ultimate tribute to him.

"David's great love was football and he had particular affections for Rossendale United and Manchester United. Since his young childhood he was always around the place and no matter who was in charge the one constant was that they all knew David.

"The primary aim of the memorial fund is to pass money forward to sporting oriented groups or individuals that do not fall into normal charitable categories."

To raise more money, a fun day is taking place in Newchurch on July 17.

Derek Langley, Manchester United's recruitment officer, said: "It has been a pleasure to come here tonight.

"A few of the players that have played tonight have lots of talent and some are now ready for the first team.

"The spectators have seen some quality football from some of the best up and coming players we have."

David's family would like to say thank you to all the businesses who sponsored and donated gifts for the raffle, including match sponsors ChemDry UK Ltd, Kingsmill, John Stephenson & Sons, Bacup Travel, C & D Transport Rossendale Ltd, Honda Goldwing Owners Club and JB Broadley's.
