Whitby 2 Radcliffe 2 (Radcliffe won 8-7 on pens): GOALKEEPER Danny Hurst was Radcliffe Borough's hero as they won a nerve-wracking Unibond Premier Division play-off penalty shoot-out at Whitby to keep alive their promotion hopes.

Hurst saved Graham Robinson's spot-kick -- the 20th of the shoot-out -- to take Borough through Tuesday night's quarter-final 8-7 on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

Borough will now face Burscough at Stainton Park on Saturday in the push for a place in next season's Conference Second Division North, after the Linnets beat Marine 3-1.

Whitby went in front after just two minutes when Liam Gildea's mishit shot found the bottom corner after Anthony Ormerod's effort had been blocked.

Steve Foster headed wide a golden chance to equalise for Radcliffe midway through the first half, shortly after Simon Carden had gone close.

Radcliffe equalised with 18 minutes to go through former Rochdale midfielder Lee Duffy, who exchanged passes with Carden before drilling the ball into the bottom corner.

Whitby keeper Dave Campbell then made a superb save to keep out Karl Marginson's volley, but the home side also had chances to win the match inside 90 minutes.

Steve Foster gave Radcliffe the lead five minutes into extra time, when he took advantage of a defensive slip to slam a shot past Campbell.

But with six minutes left, Paul Campbell was brought down by Simon Kelly, and Alex Veart equalised for Whitby from the penalty spot.

That set up the penalty shoot-out, with both sides missing two out of their five to take it to sudden death. At 7-7, Davey Luker converted for Radcliffe, before Hurst made his match-winning save.
