A BLACKBURN mum has been given three months to get her daughter to school - for the first time in two years.

The 40-year-old mum told Blackburn magistrates she thought her daughter was being reintroduced to school life by an education action team.

But the court was told the Witton Park County High School pupil had not been to lessons once since school restarted in September.

Now the mother, who has a history of drug problems, has been told she must make sure the year 9 pupil gets to classes.

She was granted bail by the courts and told to return in July when the school register will be studied to make sure the court's instructions have been carried out.

The case comes two weeks after a Northampton woman was jailed for three weeks for allowing her children to play truant from school.

Northampton County Council took action after each child missed between 21 and 38 school days.

The 12-year-old boy had missed 38 school days out of 62, an eight-year-old 28 out of 62 and a girl, 21 out of 96.

The Northampton mother admitted knowing her children were missing school and failing to encourage their attendance.

Although Blackburn magistrates made no mention of a jail sentence education experts said the mother could be imprisoned if the courts believe the case merits it.

A Department for Education and Skills spokesman said: "Parents have been jailed in the past so any case serious enough could end up with the same result."

Solicitors acting for the mother said it was in their client's best interests to get the child back in the classroom and she would do all she could to make sure the register was full.

An update will be given in July, a week before Witton Park County High School closes for the summer holidays.
